Glimpses Of Fall

Horseshoe Rapids

Description:The days to enjoy our fall colours are rapidly dwindling so I enjoy every opportunity to grab what I can...while it lasts:-) These are the Horseshoe ( Fer a cheval) rapids on the Jacques-Cartier river, a favorite for whitewater canoeing and kayaking. But these rapids weren't always used for recreational purposes. For many decades until they were stopped 30 years ago, pulp and paper companies used this river to float logs down to the mill at the mouth of the river in Donnacona. These rapids, and others like it,were "beneficial" to the paper mills because the rocks in the rapids ripped off the bark from the logs which saved them "debarking" costs. But that was done at a cost to the environment as there is still deadlogs and bark residue along parts of the river.
